10 Tips for Traveling Healthy

10 Tips for Traveling Healthy

How to stay on the go and out of the doctor’s office.

1. Get your flu shot
Why risk it? The tiny needle is way less painful than a few days in bed with the flu while on holiday. You’ll be up to 60% less likely to contract the virus, and even if you do the symptoms will be less severe for a speedier recovery.

2. Wash your hands
It sounds simple because it is. Wash your hands frequently when you’re spending time in public spaces, and refrain from touching your face or mouth to avoid the spread of germs. Antibacterial wipes are your friend. We’ve learned by now that airplane armrests and seatback tray tables are chock-full of germs and bacteria. Wipe it all down.

3. Hydrate
Drinking adequate amounts of water becomes even more important when you add altitude into the mix. Make sure your pre-travel plans include hydrating, and keep water on hand during and after your flight as well.

4. Take your vitamins
This is a general golden rule, but even more important while traveling since you’re exposed to all kinds of new bugs, strains, and bacteria. Don’t forget your probiotics – your gut needs to stay healthy, too.

5. Eat well
Fast food and heavy late-night meals can derail even the cleanest of eaters. Travel with your own healthy snacks (nuts, bananas, turkey jerky.) for when jet lag or hunger strikes..

6. Get good sleep
A rested body is more well-equipped to fend off a cold or a flu. Employ good sleep practices so you’re armed with lots of energy and a strong immune system.

7. Research your destination
Depending on where you’re going, you may need more than just vitamins and bananas to keep you healthy. Research whether pre-travel vaccinations are needed, and whether mosquitos or other bugs might be an issue. Ask a health coach how to combat jet lag or fear of flying.

8. Avoid unnecessary stress
Long lines, late trains, and noisy passengers. Inconvenient and inevitable? Yes. Don’t feed on the frenzy. Try to rise above by meditating, listening to soothing music, and focusing on the positive. You will also model your calm demeanor for your family and travel mates.

9. Exercise
Endorphins always come to the rescue. Take a long walk, grab a guest pass to a local gym, or do an online exercise class in your hotel room to break a sweat.

10. Explore the space
Getting outside gives your body the gift of sunlight, fresh air, and a change of scenery. Not to mention the opportunity to discover a new favorite coffee shop, park, art gallery, or boulevard in whatever place you are visiting. Enjoy!
