Sorry to have dropped off the blogging map . . . I have been literally swamped with my X PRIZE projects. It has been an incredible rush but our impossible time lines means that the nose is to the grindstone big time. Please look out for an upcoming announcement on April 14 regarding the Initial Prize Design for the Healthcare X PRIZE.

On top of the pressures from that deadline, I have the privilege to prepare to speak at two excellent venues – The World Health Care Congress (where the X PRIZE announcement will be held) in Washignton DC on April 14 and Health 2.0 Conference the following week April 21-23 in Boston. I just got off the call with Indu Subaiya and Josh Seidman regarding my one hour fourty-five minute session. It is going to be a rocking session . . .

Here are my all star panelist:

• James Hereford Group Health Cooperative
  • James Hereford is executive vice president of Strategic Services and Quality at Group Health Cooperative, one of the nation’s largest consumer-governed health care systems. His responsibilities include strategic oversight of technology, quality, human resources and strategic planning. Hereford has been instrumental in the development of secure Web portals for Group Health contracted providers, employers, brokers, and members at www.ghc.org. He also oversaw the implementation of a comprehensive electronic medical record for patients at Group Health–operated medical centers and clinics—one of the nation’s largest. He has also been a key figure in the implementation of a lean based management and improvement system at Group Health. Hereford is a faculty member at the University of Washington, where he has taught operations management in the Master of Health Administration program. Hereford is chair of the Washington State Health Care Authority Health Information Infrastructure Advisory Board, commissioned to create a statewide clinical data sharing infrastructure, and on the board of OneHealthPort, a shared technology security service. He is a frequent speaker nationally on operational improvement through the use of lean and technology. Prior to his current position, Hereford has held the positions of Executive Director of Health Informatics, Director of Service Quality, and Quality Consultant at Group Health. Prior to coming to Group Health, Hereford had his own consulting practice. Hereford holds a Bachelor and Masters of Science in Mathematics from Montana State University.
• John Halamka, MD – Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
  • John D. Halamka, MD, MS, is Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School, Chairman of the New England Health Electronic Data Interchange Network (NEHEN), CEO of MA-SHARE (a Regional Health Information Organization), Chair of the US Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP), and a practicing Emergency Physician. As Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he is responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative and academic information technology serving 3000 doctors, 14000 employees and two million patients. As Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School, he oversees all educational, research and administrative computing for 18000 faculty and 3000 students. As Chairman of NEHEN he oversees the administrative data exchange in Massachusetts. As CEO of MA-SHARE he oversees the clinical data exchange efforts in Massachusetts. As Chair of HITSP he coordinates the process of electronic standards harmonization among stakeholders nationwide.
• Rushika Fernandopulle, MD Renaissance Health
  • Dr. Fernandopulle is a founder of Renaissance Health, a leader in the design and implementation of high performing, innovative health care delivery systems. He works with a select group of progressive physician groups, hospitals, employers, unions, and public agencies to create new ways to deliver care to dramatically improve quality and service and reduce overall expenditures. He was the first Executive Director of the Harvard Interfaculty Program for Health Systems Improvement (PHSI), an effort to leverage top faculty from across Harvard University and senior leaders in health care organizations to tackle the largest, most difficult problems facing the health system. Prior to these positions, Dr. Fernandopulle was Managing Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Consumer Health Initiative, and Managing Director of the Clinical Initiatives Center, both divisions of the Advisory Board Company, a membership based research and consulting firm located in Washington DC. He is the co-author or editor of several publications including Health Care Policy, a textbook for physicians and medical students; Uninsured in America: Life and Death in the Land of Opportunity, a book describing what it means to be uninsured in America; and several articles on improving the quality of care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr. Fernandopulle earned his A.B., M.D., and M.P.P. (Masters in Public Policy) from Harvard University, completed his clinical training at the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts General Hospital, is board certified in internal medicine, and currently serves on the clinical staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the faculty of Harvard Medical School.
• Don Caruso, MD Hitchock-Keene Clinic
  • Don Caruso, MD, has been a primary care physician, practicing family medicine, at Dartmouth Hitchcock-Keene Clinic since 1992. He also has been their lead physician spearheading the adoption of electronic health records and consumer use of electronic tools. Since 2005, he served as their Associate Medical Director, and was Chairman of Family Medicine for the 12 years prior. He was Microsoft Physician of the Year in 2003. He received his MD from New York Medical College and completed his family medicineresidency at UMASS Medical Center. He served as Medical Director and Family Physician atHarrington Family Practice from 1987 to 1992.

I will also have a marquee lineup of presenters including:

• Myca / Hello Health – will be showcasing their new platform. The bits and parts and concepts that I have teased out of Jay and some of their advisors indicate to me that this will be the *buzz* at the conference.
• Google Health – Will be showcasing their new sharing service – essentially “friending” people to give them temporary access to your health information. Google has been somewhat quite lately and I think people are assuming they are building some amazing infrastructure that is going to enable a ton of new data efficiencies.
• Group Health Cooperative – they are leveraging EPIC MyChart platform. Apparently they convinced Judy to do a ton of innovation around this before they adopted it broadly and it has paid off big time. As a fully integrated delivery organization, they have an alignment leg up on people but their results speak for themselves.
